Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the study and analysis of behavior as it relates to things in the environment. Utilizing the principles of behaviorism and learning (e.g. reinforcement, punishment, and extinction), ABA programs aim to decrease challenging and inappropriate behaviors while simultaneously increasing socially significant behaviors. ABA is an evidence based, best practice that individualizes each program.

Within an ABA program a number of procedures and interventions may be used. Some of these procedures include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT) - teaching small units of behavior in a structured setting.
  • Natural Environment Training (NET) and incidental Teaching (IT) - teaching behavior in structured learning opportunities within the natural environment.
  • Reinforcement - the procedure of providing or removing preferred items, edibles and social praise following the occurrence of a behavior to increase the future frequency of that behavior.
  • Differential reinforcement - providing higher levels of reinforcement for desired behaviors and little to no reinforcement for undesired behaviors.
  • Extinction - Removing reinforcement to decrease the ocurrence of a behavior.
  • Punishment - the procedure of providing or removing undesired stimuli into the environment to decrease the future frequency of a behavior. While not common, and not a first line of defense, punishment procedures may be used to decrease certain target behaviors. Whenever a punishment procedure is used, an alternative and functionally equivalent behavior will also be taught.

Durind your child’s ABA session you may see our Technicians implement the procedures listed above. They will also be tracking your child’s progress on tablets using Central Reach Data Collection System.

Practitioners of applied behavior analysis (ABA) aim to improve socially important behavior by using interventions that are based upon principles of learning theory. This include Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) or Functional Analysis Assessment (FAA) along with 6 month ABA Treatment Plan.

Bay Area Behavior Consultants offers supervision towards certification by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. We are able to offer BCBA supervision to candidates located all over the globe!

As a parent of a child on the autism spectrum, you’ve undoubtedly figured out that the parenting methods that work for other children are just not effective for a child with autism. It is often beneficial and even necessary for parents to implement intervention strategies in the home or community. Direct parent involvement has become widely accepted as part of a total autism intervention program. Given the complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder and the challenges parents face, it is often beneficial and even necessary for them to implement intervention strategies in the home or community. Direct parent involvement has become widely accepted as part of a total autism intervention program (Iovannone, Dunlap, Huber, & Kincaid, 2003; Levy, Kim, & Olive, 2006; National Research Council, 2001). Research has demonstrated that when parents serve as active participants in their child’s treatment, positive results are obtained (e.g. Aldred, Green, & Adams, 2004; McConachie, Randle, Hammal, & Le Couteur, 2005; Symon, 2005)..

At Bay Area Behavior Consultants, we offer a variety of parent education programs designed to teach you effective parenting techniques. These techniques are based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and are designed for children with autism. However, very often the information can be useful in managing the behavior of other children and even spouses.

Because your family has unique needs and time commitments, we offer two different formats for parent training: a six-week ongoing instructional program based on the tenets of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), or four-hour workshops. At either of these programs, you’ll learn valuable information about behavior issues commonly found in children with autism, such as potty training, managing tantrums, getting your child to stop talking back, and more.

Like many other skills, social skills for children with Autism must often be taught directly. This is because children with autism do not easily acquire those skills naturally from their environment, like their typically developing peers. It is also because autistic children have greater difficulty reading subtle social cues, which makes interpreting meaning challenging.

Teaching social skills directly can take many forms. For example, in addition to video modeling, using a method called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is often successful. ABA involves breaking down a task into its component parts to teach it and using positive reinforcement to motivate the desired behavior. Social skills are important for inclusion in the classroom. Inclusion in a school environment with typically developing peers is often not dependent solely on a child's IQ or intelligence. Children with Autism and Asperger Syndrome are often capable of working at grade level, but are at risk of not being included in a classroom because of behavioral issues or poorly developed social skills.
